Last Summer in the City, first published in 1973, is a bitter story about disillusionment with life and reluctance to settle for what's left of it. Calligarich, like Moravia or Pavese, interweaves nostalgia with irony, and treats apathy as an indelible feature of modern man. He describes Italian class structures, the attitude of Italians towards foreigners and the relationship between man and city.
